Battle of Ballantyne Memorial - June 18
Monday, June 18, 2018 marks the 83rd anniversary of the Battle of Ballantyne, a demonstration that turned violent when 1,000 striking longshore workers and their supporters tried to march to Ballantyne Pier to protest the unloading of ships by strikebreakers. The protesters encountered both the Vancouver Police and the RCMP who tear-gassed the crowd.
On the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Ballantyne in 2010, a permanent memorial was dedicated at New Brighton Park. Since then, past and present members, family and friends of the ILWU gather annually at the memorial to commemorate the event.
Join us this year at New Brighton Park, on Monday, June 18th at 11:00 AM. Click on the map of New Brighton Park to enlarge the image of the memorial location.
A few years ago the Vancouver Sun featured the Battle of Ballantyne as a "This Week in History" story, accessible here.
