CITY ON EDGE: A Century of Vancouver Activism

A new exhibit featuring photographs and artifacts relating to Vancouver's labour history launches TODAY at the Museum of Vancouver. Visually stunning, City on Edge: A Century of Vancouver Activism is a photo-based exhibition exploring how protest demonstrations have shaped Vancouver's identity. The exhibition is a unique opportunity to access rarely seen images capturing epic moments of Vancouver's protest history form the Vancouver Sun and The Province newspapers' photo collection. These photographs are exceptional historical records of intense and transformative moments in the lives of Vancouverites. Running from September 28, 2017 to February 18, 2018.

Fall Social & Service Appreciation Event

Local 517 would like to invite its members to our annual Fall Social and Service Appreciation Event! The event is a great way to socialize with your fellow union members in a fun and relaxed setting, as well as an opportunity to acknowledge all our Committee Members, Shop Stewards and Executive Board members for their hard work over the past year. Orange Shirt Day: Every Child Matters

StartFragmentOrange Shirt Day is an event held annually on September 30 with the goal of engaging Canadians in a meaningful discussion about the effects of Residential Schools and the legacy they have left behind. The date was chosen because it is the time of year in which children were taken from their homes to residential schools, and because it is an opportunity to set the stage for anti-racism and anti-bullying policies for the coming school year. Fight for $15 Rally

On Wednesday, September 27 delegates to the ILWU Canada Young Workers Conference will be leading a Fight for $15 rally to support raising the minimum wage in BC to $15.

Walk for Reconciliation - September 24

Join us and support the spirit of ‘Namwayut - We are all one. The Walk for Reconciliation is an opportunity for people of all backgrounds to make a personal contribution to the reconciliation movement. How we build relationships today affects our next generations. Through walking in the spirit of reconciliation you honour intergenerational lives taken, honour survivors and those impacted by the Indian residential school system, and show your support for the youth in all communities. The 2 km walk begins at the plaza next to the Queen Elizabeth Theatre (650 Cambie Street) this Sunday, September 24 at 9:30 AM. Following the walk, a Reconciliation Expo will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Nominations & Elections 2017

The 2017 Nomination & Election period is upon us. As reported at the last general membership meeting, the nominations for the Executive Board positions of 1st Vice-President, Financial Secretary, Membership Trustee and Odd-Year Trustee were open effective 8:00 AM on Friday, September 15 2017. Nominations will close at 4:00 PM on Friday, September 29th 2017. All prospective nominees are subject to the conditions as defined in the ILWU Local 517 By-Laws, Article II – Nominations and Elections.
